Print Design
To be honest, I struggled a bit over whether to offer this service or not. On the one hand, I'm good at it. I've been doing it since 1986. I understand four-color process design. I understand spot color WAY too well. I can do nifty things with just one or two colors to keep print costs down... But on the other hand, I've been doing it since 1986. I'd rather go outside and take pictures to be honest.
But, well, I'm good at it, and I could use a little money... So, if you're from out of town and need a brochure, business cards, letterhead, or whatever designed, just lemme know! (I'd like to discourage anyone from Sioux City contracting me to design a print job, just to avoid any possible "conflict of interest" with my boss at the print shop.)
The Goods
If you hire me to do a project destined to see a printing press, here's what I'll do for you...
Give me an idea of what you want (two-color business cards, for example) and your logo. I'll design the business cards (for example) and e-mail you a PDF to proof. We'll go back and forth a few times until you're happy with it. Once everything's good and approved, I'll copy the job, all attendant files (graphics, what have you), and a high-resolution PDF onto a CD and mail it to you. Then all you gotta do is take the CD to the print shop of your choice. (If you don't want a CD, I can just e-mail the high-resolution PDF to you, which you can then forward on to the print shop of your choice.)
I'll also make sure to put all my contact info with the job, so if the print shop has a problem with the file, or needs a different format, they can talk directly to me rather than confusing you by burbling on about bleeds and gripper and linescreens and technical stuff like that.
The Cost
As with most things creative, it's nearly impossible to put a price tag on design work. The best anyone's been able to come up with is to simply charge an hourly rate. Mine happens to be $40 an hour. That may sound high, but I encourage you to check around - you'll find I'm actually pretty reasonable.
Here's a quick sample -- a trifold brochure for a volunteer organization I belong to.
